In The News…

C|Net is briefly getting into political news by reporting on a couple of Republican Senate staffers who accessed files in the home directories of Democratic members of the Judiciary Committee. While their apparent intent was to help ease the process of getting certain judicial nominees on the bench, there is still more investigation to be done.

Georgia State is getting a little bit of a black eye in the media (video) over an incident in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, which held a Hip Hop-themed party where two members showed up in blackface.

A proposed new road would cut through the Bobby Jones Golf Club in order to bring another connection between Northside Dr. and Peachtree St., and to reroute traffic going to Piedmont Hospital. The neighbors are still not sure what to think.

Among other really amazing articles, Harper’s is setting into perspective the extent to which homeland security spending is way overblown. No pun is intended here.

Hillary Clinton has something to say about the economy: the worst policy is no strategy. President Bush has no strategy.

  1. So is GSU going to have a meeting next denouncing all of the bleach-blondes? Dyed redheads?

Sorry, I just don’t see the outrage, other than those choosing to be offended. Perhaps someone could explain it to me. I’m not seeing an explaination in the video clip.

I fully believe we will never have racial equality until people no longer notice the color of skin any more than we notice the color of one’s hair today.

  2. Here’s the latest, from President Patton:

TO: Georgia State University Faculty, Staff and Students

    FROM: President Carl Patton

The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity has been charged with several violations of the student code of conduct, including, but not limited to, engaging in racially harassing conduct.

Discussions between the fraternity and members of the Dean of Students’ staff and representatives of several African American organizations have not indicated a willingness on the part of the fraternity to accept appropriate responsibility for its actions. Furthermore, recent communication from the national office of Pi Kappa Alpha has indicated they are not willing to address the situation in any meaningful way.

Therefore, I am suspending the fraternity from Georgia State University until the charges against it can be heard by the University Senate Committee on Student Discipline and appropriate action taken.

During this suspension, I hope that the leadership of the fraternity will explore with other groups on campus ways in which to prevent future occurrences of racially offensive conduct.

    Thank you.
