Always on the move

Misnamed Big Boxes

It happened again.

First, Lowes moved to the Edgewood neighborhood in Atlanta and called it the “Midtown” location. Now, having not learned from the example from Lowes, Best Buy moved in an did exactly the same thing. Perhaps this does not mean a whole lot in the wider scheme of things, but the clear identification of neighborhoods remains an important way for its residents to keep up neighborhood pride. It helps neither Edgewood nor Midtown for insensitive big boxes to move to Edgewood and call it Midtown.

Closer to my part of town, a developer is building a large, mixed-use project at the corner of I-285 and Atlanta Rd. Originally, the development was going to be called “Vinings West.” From looking at the signs around there today, it appears the developer thought better of the idea, thank goodness. This is the area of town I like to call “Faux Vinings” because it’s not really Vinings. It’s Oakdale — zip code three double-oh eight oh.

And don’t call us “Sminings.” Ugh!!
